Euthanasie bij dieren

Voor dieren is er al veel langer
Euthanasie dan voor de mens. Al sinds jaar en dag horen we dat
mensen een dier hebben laten inslapen bij de dierenarts. Prachtig,
dat dit kan, maar aan alle discussies en problemen die gepaard
gingen met het maken van de wet op de euthanasie voor mensen, kun je
zien, dat die beslissing helemaal niet zo eenvoudig is. Daar komt
nog bij, dat mensen zelf hun mening hierover kenbaar kunnen maken.
Is het niet op het moment zelf, dan hebben ze daar toch meestal
vroeger al eens over gesproken met huisgenoten of artsen.

Bij dieren
missen we dat. En hoe erg we dat missen -het feit dat ze niets
kunnen zeggen, wat ze zelf het beste vinden- dat beseffen we pas
goed als we zelf een ernstig zieke kat hebben.

Soms ken je je
kat zo goed, dat je eigenlijk in de ogen kunt zien, hoe ze het leven
ervaren. Dan kun je door het goed observeren van je kat samen met de
dierenarts besluiten wanneer het moment daar is om in te grijpen.

Het is
ontzettend verdrietig om een geliefd dier te moeten missen, maar
als het op deze manier kan, dan heb je later toch heel goede
herinneringen aan die laatste levensfase.

Helaas kun je
niet altijd rustig en weloverwogen een plan maken. Bijvoorbeeld na
een ongeluk of bij acute ernstige ziekte kun je volkomen onverwacht
voor de beslissing komen te staan. Het is waarschijnlijk goed om
jezelf dan de volgende vragen voor te leggen:

Is er een reële kans op
herstel;

2.
Kan de kat, als hij
hierdoor komt, weer een dierwaardig leven lijden;

3.
Kan de kat eventueel met
medicatie nog een prettig leven hebben;
- 4.
Als ik besluit om geen
euthanasie te laten plegen, doe ik dat dan ook voor de kat of
alleen voor
mezelf;
- 5.
Is het niet zo dat ik
een besluit neem tot euthanasie uit gemakzucht, want dat zal ik
mezelf altijd blijven verwijten;
- 6.
Heb ik voldoende overleg
gepleegd met de dierenarts over alle mogelijkheden en
onmogelijkheden;

Heb je alle
mogelijkheden samen met de dierenarts afgewogen en kom je samen tot
het besluit, dat hier geen redding meer mogelijk is en dat je er
goed aan doet het dier verder ondraaglijk lijden te besparen dan
neem je een juiste beslissing.

Die
weloverwogen beslissing zal helpen bij het verwerken van het verlies
en maken dat je vrede hebt met je besluit.

The Greatest Gift
I always knew this time would come,
From the very instant our eyes first met.

Als twee lieve bruine ogen zich sluiten gaan voorgoed
en je zonder haar levende lijfje naar huis toe moet
Met veel verdriet en een hart vol pijn.

Dit is het beste, ik mocht niet egoïstisch zijn.
Nog zo jong, vanaf de 4e dag bij ons.

The way to Cat Heaven
is a field of sweet grass
where crickets and butterflies play.
A cat may be late in getting to Heaven . . .
there's so much fun on the way!
But an angel will wait
at the yellow front door,
wait till
a kitty comes home.
And when she arrives,
he'll give her a kiss
and some milk
in a bowl all her own.
There are trees
in Cat Heaven,
trees made just for cat
trees growing
so green and so high.
But no one gets stuck in a tree
anymore ....
if a cat wants down,
she will fly!
And oh the toys,
kitty toys everywhere,
thousands and thousands
go by.
There are buttons and baubles
and small cotton mice ......
there is catnip afloat
in the sky!
There are angels,
of course,
with soft angel laps
where kitties can purr
loud and strong.
The angels will rub
kitties' noses and ears
and sing them
a Cat Heaven song.
And when cats are hungry,
there's God's kitchen counter
all covered with
white kitty dishes,
full of tuna and salmon
and mounds of sardines,
and wonderful little pink fishes.
The cats in Cat Heaven
are so loved and spoiled
God lets them all
lie on his bed . . .
He walks in His garden
with a good black book
and a kitty
asleep on His head.
Then when a cat needs,
she may just simply ponder
and watch the blue world
deep and wide . . .
She will watch the old house
where she once lived and wandered,
and the people who loved her inside.
All cats love Heaven,
they know the way there,
they know where
the angel cats fly.
They'll run past the stars
and the moon and the sun . . . . . .
to curl up with God in the sky.
